How to convert a MOV file to MP3

  1. 1

    Choose a MOV file

Save the video to this device first. Choose the .mov file in the file picker, or drag it from Finder on a Mac. This page accepts one MOV at a time.

  2. 2

    Set the MP3 output

Start with the default 192 kbps. Choose 128, 256 or 320 kbps if needed; leave sample rate and channels on Auto unless another app requires a specific setting. To save an excerpt, enable Trim audio in Advanced settings and enter start and end times.

  3. 3

    Convert and save

Click Convert to MP3 and keep the tab open. Listen to the result, then click Download MP3. Use your browser’s downloads list to find the saved file.

Working with a QuickTime or iPhone MOV

Start with a complete local file

If the clip is stored in Photos or iCloud, save a copy accessible to your browser and wait for it to finish downloading. Check the extension: an MP4 export belongs on the MP4 tool, even if it came from an iPhone.

Follow the MOV to MP3 steps on Mac

Check the format on a Mac

Open the video in QuickTime Player. In the Window menu, choose Show Movie Inspector to see the media formats. H.264 video with AAC audio is the MOV combination verified here; the .mov extension alone is not enough.

Apple: view media information

Choose MP3 or keep the AAC audio

Use this page when you need an MP3. To avoid encoding the AAC audio again, open Extract Audio and select Original audio before choosing the MOV. Compatible AAC is saved as M4A.

Verified MOV support

  • ✓Input container: QuickTime MOV (.mov).
  • ✓Verified video codec: H.264.
  • ✓Verified audio codec: AAC.
  • ✓Output: MP3 using the selected bitrate and optional audio settings.

MOV audio extraction use cases

  • ✓Save spoken audio from an iPhone video you recorded.
  • ✓Create an MP3 from a QuickTime presentation or Mac screen capture you can use.
  • ✓Extract reference audio from a compatible camera MOV export.

MOV containers and codecs

MOV is a container

A .mov file is a QuickTime container. The extension does not identify the video and audio codecs stored inside it.

Understand containers and codecs

The tested combination matters

This page is verified with MOV containing H.264 video and AAC audio. HEVC/H.265, ProRes and other MOV combinations have not been verified here; an iPhone recording is not automatically covered.

Choosing MP3 quality for a MOV source

192 kbps is the balanced default. 128 kbps creates a smaller file, while 256 and 320 kbps use more space.

MOV-to-MP3 conversion is lossy. A higher output bitrate cannot restore detail already missing from the AAC source.

Keeping sample rate and channels on Auto avoids an unnecessary format change unless your playback target requires one.

MOV conversion limits

  • This page does not support every MOV codec. Files outside the verified H.264 and AAC boundary can fail with a codec error.
  • A QuickTime screen capture may have no recorded audio. Play the source first: converting cannot recover a microphone or sound source that was not recorded.
  • The soft limit is 500 MiB on desktop and 200 MiB on mobile, but available browser memory may be lower.
  • Conversion speed depends on the file, device and browser. Keep this page open until it finishes.

Frequently asked questions

Is my MOV uploaded?

No. The selected MOV is processed locally in your browser and is not sent to our servers.

Which MOV files have been verified?

We verify QuickTime MOV containers with H.264 video and AAC audio. MOV can hold many other codecs, so the page does not claim every MOV file will work.

Can I convert an iPhone MOV to MP3?

Yes, when it is a compatible H.264 and AAC MOV. Save an accessible copy on the device, select it in the browser, and keep the page open through conversion. Other iPhone recording modes, including HEVC/H.265, have not been verified here.

Can I keep MOV audio without converting it to MP3?

Use the Extract Audio from Video tool and select Original audio. It copies the first audio track into an M4A file when that track is compatible AAC, without re-encoding. That avoids another lossy conversion, but it does not improve the source quality.

Why does my QuickTime screen recording have no sound?

The recording may have no audio track, or its audio track may contain silence. Listen to the original in QuickTime Player and check its media information. If the needed sound was not recorded, you need a new recording with the right audio source enabled.

Where is the MP3 after conversion?

The result stays on this page until you click Download MP3. After clicking it, check your browser’s downloads list and configured save location. On an iPhone, use the browser’s download controls to open the saved file. Download before resetting or closing the page.

Does 320 kbps improve the original audio?

No. A higher MP3 bitrate may preserve more during conversion, but it cannot recreate detail absent from the source.
