Local conversion without media uploads

Your WebM recording stays on this device throughout conversion. The browser creates the MP3 locally, with no media upload to a conversion server.

How to convert a WebM file to MP3

  1. 1

    Choose a WebM file

Stop the recording and save its finished .webm file. Play it once to check the sound, then choose the file here or drag it onto the converter on desktop.

  2. 2

    Choose MP3 settings

Keep 192 kbps for a starting point, or choose 128, 256 or 320 kbps. Auto sample rate and channels keep the source settings where supported. Trim audio can save one segment when the browser can read the recording’s length; recordings with unknown duration can still be converted in full.

  3. 3

    Process in the browser

Click Convert to MP3, keeping this tab open. Listen to the result, then click Download MP3. The saved audio appears in your browser’s downloads list.

Before converting a browser recording

Check which sound was recorded

In your recording app, enable the microphone or shared tab audio you need. These are separate sources, and available audio capture depends on the browser and what you share. Make a short test and listen before recording a full session.

Follow the WebM browser recording guide

No audio track or just silence?

A video-only recording returns a no-audio-track error. A recording with an audio track that contains silence may convert successfully but still sound silent. Check the saved source; MP3 conversion cannot recreate missing speech or tab audio.

Troubleshoot a missing audio track

Keep Opus when MP3 is optional

MP3 helps when your player or editing app does not accept WebM audio. If it supports Ogg Opus, use Extract Audio with Original audio selected to copy compatible Opus into a .opus file without encoding it again.

Extract the original Opus audio

Verified WebM support

  • ✓Input container: WebM (.webm).
  • ✓Verified video codec: VP9.
  • ✓Verified audio codec: Opus.
  • ✓Output: MP3 using the selected bitrate and optional audio settings.

WebM audio extraction use cases

  • ✓Save audio from a browser screen recording you created.
  • ✓Make an MP3 copy of a compatible webpage video export you can reuse.
  • ✓Prepare portable audio from a VP9 and Opus WebM recording.

WebM containers and audio codecs

WebM is a web-oriented container

A .webm file describes the container, not a single audio format. WebM can contain Opus or Vorbis audio; changing its filename to .mp3 does not convert either codec.

VP9 and Opus are the verified boundary

The verified combination on this page is VP9 video with Opus audio. A browser recording can use a different codec combination. Vorbis is not available in Original audio mode, and untested WebM variants are not covered by the Opus result.

Choosing MP3 quality for a WebM source

192 kbps is the default balance between output size and MP3 quality; 128, 256 and 320 kbps are also available.

Transcoding Opus to MP3 is lossy. Increasing the MP3 bitrate cannot restore detail already removed from the WebM audio.

Auto sample rate and channels normally preserve the source layout without an extra forced conversion.

WebM conversion limits

  • This page does not support every WebM codec. The verified boundary is VP9 video with Opus audio.
  • A WebM without an audio track cannot produce an MP3. An existing track that contains silence is different: conversion can complete without producing audible sound.
  • The soft limit is 500 MiB on desktop and 200 MiB on mobile, while real memory availability varies.
  • Conversion runs in the open browser tab and can take longer on lower-memory devices.

Frequently asked questions

Does this WebM converter upload my recording?

No. The WebM bytes stay in your browser during conversion and are not sent to our servers.

Which WebM codec combination is verified?

The verified sample contains VP9 video and Opus audio. WebM files with other codecs may not decode in the current local engine.

Can I convert a browser recording?

Yes, if the saved recording is a compatible WebM with audio, such as VP9 and Opus. Finish saving the recording before choosing it. If your recorder exports MP4 or MOV instead, use the matching tool rather than renaming the file.

Why does my WebM recording have no audio?

Screen sharing does not always include sound. The recorder may capture video without microphone or tab audio, depending on your settings and browser. Check the saved recording before converting. If it has no audio track, record again with the needed source enabled; a higher MP3 bitrate will not recover it.

The MP3 downloaded, but why is it silent?

First check the player volume and play the source WebM. A silent audio track can be encoded into a valid but silent MP3. If the source has audible sound and the MP3 does not, check whether it has multiple audio tracks: this tool uses the first one and does not offer track selection.

Can I keep the Opus audio without making an MP3?

Yes, for a compatible Opus track. Open Extract Audio from Video, choose Original audio and select the WebM. The result is an Ogg Opus file with a .opus extension. It keeps the encoded audio without converting it to MP3; your player must support that output.

Why is MP3 quality different from the WebM audio?

Opus and MP3 are different lossy codecs. Converting between them changes the encoding and cannot improve the original source.
